Nikolaas scratched his head - a bit embarrassed, but secretly quite happy for the Canadian's words. "I dunno...just odd...I've never met anyone who's declared they wanted to be my friend like that, closest I think I've gotten was a guy using me as a bodyguard..." it really was strange, he'd gotten so used to being alone, not caring really anymore about needing anyone else - crowds always made him un-comfortable anyways...but still, perhaps it would be nice to have a friend for once, talk to someone outside of the family who would run away in fear or disgust...
"no...I'm grateful, really" Nikolaas smiled again down at the small Canadian boy "I guess...I just have to get used to someone actually referring to me as a friend" He smiled, a bit awkwardly. He'd never been in a situation like this before, so he really didn't know what to say or how to properly respond to any of this. Perhaps it would come to him later.
"If anyone's been nice, it's you...I'm the one who frightened you just a few moments ago...whick you know..probably wasn't neccesairy..." he chuckled slightly at the memory of Matthew vaulting over the arm-rest in shock at the loud noise he had made, but then quickly changed his mind, it would be rude to laugh at someone who had so very kindly offered to be his friend. Nikolaas held up his hands, trying to look as apologetic as he possibly could "sorry...didn't mean to laugh..." He didn't want to offend or make the blond boy angry.
He pulled out his lighter and started flicking the lid on and off, and juggling the lighter around in his hand - a nervous habit he did when he couldn't think of anything to say. It was also something to do when he got bored...but right now he was just at loss for what to say. Sure, in debates in class, Nikolaas could be rather chatty, defending his point of view till it gave others headaches, but finding something to talk to with a friend, that was something he wasn't quite sure where begin with ...

Matthew made a disapproving face, “Why would someone want to use you as a bodyguard?” That’s not fair, he wanted to add, but he didn’t think Nikolaas would understand where he was coming from if he said that. Sure, this person was bigger than he, himself, was, a lot bigger in fact, but why would someone use another person as a bodyguard? It definitely wasn’t right in his books. He frowned and shook his head. “That’s just wrong.” He finally decided to add, nodding to himself. That other person must have had no morals. Treating people like that was just wrong.
Matthew grinned now, “You will have to get used to it.” Not that he’d be telling everyone he met, but it would definitely be awkward if, on the off chance he did tell someone, Nikolaas denied it outright. He drummed his fingers on his book, simply for something to do with his often twitchy fingers. If he wasn’t chewing his lip, he was wringing his hands. Habits that often ended up with him having a bloody lip, or raw fingers.
Matthew’s face flared again, feeling thoroughly embarrassed by the thought of himself being so startled by the simplest thing. He shook his head, “I’m sure you didn’t mean to scare me.” He said, his voice a little strained for a moment. He cleared his throat and turned to smile up at Nikolaas, red face and all. “Don’t worry. I’d probably laugh too if I’d gotten to see it, eh?” He turned back to his book for a moment, though he didn’t open it. He just wan’st sure what else to say.
Apparently the other boy didn’t know either, because he could hear the lighter being flicked on and off. He glanced up at Nikolaas out of the corner of his eye, watching him juggle the lighter. He wanted to say something about it, ask if the boy smoked, or mention that his parents smoked “too”... But he knew some people kept lighters for other reasons. He might take offence if he asked all of a sudden, so he staid quiet, unsure if he should open his book and start to read again.

Nikolaas sighted and looked up at the ceiling "'Cause I look scary...the guy figured hanging around me would mean others wouldn't dare come near him..." He wasn't sure what he had though about being someone's bodyguard... it hadn't been all bad, but not exactly fun to be used just so someone could feel like they where invincible "he was right too...no one dared touch him as long as I was around..." He turned to face Matthew "Appreciate the though kiddo, but I don't really mind...possibly the closest I've been to a friend...so it wasn't all bad..." Nevertheless, Nikolaas was glad he didn't have to do it anymore. Protecting someone close and dear to him was one thing, but people hanging out with him solely for that purpose, that he wasn’t to keen on…but he had gotten used to it by now, it wasn’t something he though too much about.
A small nod was Nikolaas first response to the Canadian boy's statement. Stubborn little kid, but funny none the less "Dank u...I'll try and get my head around it..." he gave a small chuckle; It was rather amusing how this small, quiet kid was proving to be quite the character. Nikolaas did not regret coming here today at all
"It was quite funny..." he smiled slightly, tempted to add 'what if I had meant to scare you? Would you think badly of me for that?' but he refrained, he was enjoying the other's company, and didn't want to risk his chances of making Matthew angry at him. Flicking his lighter on for a second and staring into the open flame, he mumbled to himself...He really wanted a cigarette...He stood up and shoved the lighter in his pocket. Looking down at Matthew he smiled before he flung his bag over his shoulder. "I need a smoke...you might want to stay here...if the teachers see you with me you'll end up in detention" Nikolaas had already been showed into detention twice since coming here - both times because he had been caught smoking. He didn't mind much himself, but he did feel it was unnecessary to drag others down with him

Matthew frowned with disappointment, like the boy who had done that to Nikolaas would see it. Actually, normally, no one saw anything he did. So it'd simply become his habit to display emotions that he almost certain no one would see. He shook his head, "That's not right." He muttered, and started chewing on his lip. He couldn't understand why people treated each other like that. He knew he'd done bad things in his life, but he always felt badly about them afterwards
For a moment, Matthew stared off into space, or, more accurately, at his book. He wasn't really thinking of anything at all. It wasn't until Nikolaas stood again that he was jolted out of his non-thoughts. Had he forgotten he was here, and was going to leave now? Matthew looked up at him, and felt overwhelming relief when he spoke to him. "Why don't you just find somewhere secret to do it?" Matthew wondered, ignoring Nikolaas's offer for him to stay and standing up.
"I'll come." Detention didn't bother him. Chances were, they'd forget they'd given it to him, and he'd be told he didn't actually have detention... Then he'd be asked to leave. Matthew shrugged that thought off, as he put his book into his bag and lifted it. One benefit to being almost completely invisible. Well, except for this person apparently. A smile broke onto his face again. He smiled often, actually, it just wasn't very often that someone noticed. They only seemed to notice his bad moods.

Nikolaas blinked and stared for a moment at the Canadian boy in confusion "Are you sure?" He was quite honestly really surprised how 'brave' this boy was. Chuckling slightly he smiled a bit "I do find quite good places to hide from the teachers...but sometimes other students tattle on me" He sighted and shifted his bag a bit. There was always someone who liked seeming him get detention or get yelled at by the older teachers. If he ever found out who it was who kept getting him into troubble...chances where he was most likely going to break a few bones.
"I don't mind the company though" He ruffled the shorter boy's hair, amused at how soft his hair was, and how cute he looked with those ears. "come on...there's a nice hidden spot behind the Gardener's shed" Nikolaas had actually befrended the school gardener/janitor, and the man actually let him smoke behind there. In return Nikolaas would occasionally help plant some flowers for the man.
Nikolaas headed out the library, and casting a glance around - to look for any teachers patrolling- headed for the gardener's shed. Satisfied he wouldn't bee seen here he dumped his bag on the ground and rummaged through his pockets for his cigarettes. Finding them he lit one up and inhaled deeply, blowing out small puffs of smoke. "Ahh~~ much better...." He lent against the shed and closed his eyes. As bad as smoking might be, it sure did make him feel a lot better.

"Of course." Matthew said, staring back at Nikolaas's confusion with his own disbelief. He really wasn't used to people doing this sort of stuff for him. It was odd. Matthew wasn't really sure how to handle it. If Nikolaas was a child, he'd give him a hug and let him know how loved he was... But he wasn't. He was an adult, almost, how do you deal with that?
Matthew's face scrunched up as he slung his bag over his shoulders. He reached up to fix his hair. "Coming." He muttered, his nose twitching slightly. He followed Nikolaas, watching where they went as they did. Momentarily he wondered if he should really be following someone he didn't know, to a place he was unfamiliar with, that was behind somewhere, that no one could see them. He quickly stomped on that thought, and told himself off for it.
Matthew watched as Nikolaas checked for teachers, and checked himself, even though he didn't have to. He crouched down to the ground, leaning against the shed in silence. He actually didn't like smoking, it was an awful habit, but he didn't want Nikolaas to get in trouble all on his own if he was going to. Perhaps, some of him thought that his invisibility was contagious. He sort of hoped it was. It would be useful.
